We were lucky enough to get early access to OpenAI’s Dalle-2, the state-of-the-art in text-to-image AI. These new AI models will undoubtedly cause major disruption in copyright law. With their ability to create near expert level images of nearly anything in any style and to mimic artists nearly identically, is it even practical to defend copyrights effectively in such a world?
OpenAI has gone even further, allowing for all images generated by its model to be owned by the creator (person who prompts Dalle2), and not OpenAI themselves. Oof. We look forward to the legal conversations that will help define copyright law for a new world of AI tools, and plan to cover these changes as they happen, but in the meantime, let’s have some fun.
With just a text prompt, the AI created the following images. Each prompt asked the AI to “imagine” what the Disney Princesses would look like if they were real people, done in the style of Martin Schoeller. See if you can identify each princess in her fully human form. Answers are at the bottom.
